Ahhhh….the depths of the internet. Where you can find anything from Kylie Jenners’ instagram to a website completely devoted to gifs of corgis. No really. Corgiorgy.com. Anyway, the internet is the place where our generation finds refuge from the world. And yes, facebook is great, but something that I have been really sucked into lately is youtube. It is definitely one of my favorite apps. EVER. I feel that it often gets overlooked, but its days of ‘80s music videos are long gone. Fashion seems to find its way into every aspect of social media, and youtube is no exception. There is an entire community of fashion bloggers and makeup gurus sharing their expertise over the magic of youtube. Not only can you see them, which seems more personal, but there is a whole culture of video editing, and you can do some pretty amazing things.
As well as being something fun, posting videos on youtube can actually become a career for those who are very successful. Every teen girl's wish..to become youtube famous. Youtubers have this image of having a perfect life, whether that's the case or not. They all seem to all live in California, have a million friends, work out everyday and are super pretty. Not to mention they have impeccable style and could probably do their makeup with their eyes closed. (which was actually a popular tag for a while.) Although some aspects of these lifestyles that they portray are a reality for them, and inspire others (which I think is the point, for many youtubers). But sometimes these people portray lifestyles that just aren’t realistic. So I suppose it’s all about finding that perfect balance between inspiring others, and depicting a lifestyle that just isn’t real.

Although watching outfit ideas is fun, many youtubers have very inspiring stories. Some of my favorite youtubers include Eva Gutowski, Alisha Marie, and Miss Remi Ashten. Take one of my favorite youtubers, Bethany Mota, easily the most famous and successful teen fashion vlogger. Most of Mota’s life she was bullied. But when she was only thirteen, she started her youtube channel (then macbaby11). She never expected the success that followed. People felt emotionally connected to her, and she had an amazing personality and style. Compared to her most recent video, you can see how much she has grown since her first video. Since she began making videos, Mota has an amazing 9,811,963 subscribers (WOW!), multiple clothing collections at Aeropostale stores (designed by her), not to mention she is a talented singer and has created two signature perfumes. She often has meetups in places like NYC, where people from around the country come to meet her (and yes, I really want to meet her). She has an entire fan base called “motavators”, and refers to all of her subscribers as her best friends. I guess you could say we’re best friends then. So next time you see her signature heart logo, just remember the inspiring story of a bullied teen who just needed people to see her true self for people to realize what she had to offer the world.

Youtube and the internet in general are just another outlet for creative expression. Though it may take some patience to sift through the debris there true gems to be found. There are people who inspire others, and have something to share whether it be outfit ideas, music, or even gifs of corgis. If it informs someone, inspires them, or just puts a smile on their face, then isn’t it worth it?
